Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the point of tutoring?
Tutoring can help students to gain knowledge and understanding of a subject, as well as improve their academic performance. We are committed to providing personalized, one-on-one instruction to each student in order to maximize their potential. Our tutoring services are designed to help students gain confidence in their ability and achieve their academic goals.
  • What subjects do you teach?
We teach students a range of literacy and mathematics skills. Our teaching methods are all based on evidence-based practices.
  • What age students do you tutor?
We tutor students from 5 up to 15 years of age.
  • How do I know if my child is struggling?
Every child learns differently and at their own pace. Some things to look out for include: struggling to remember things they have recently been taught, unable to complete tasks in the given time, are falling behind similar aged peers, becoming frustrated or disinterested in school, show signs of stress of anxiety, or have a negative attitude towards their learning.
  • Does my child need to have a diagnosed with a learning disability to use your services?
No! While some of our students have been diagnosed with specific learning disabilities, we are here to help any student who is having difficulties with their learning.
  • When and where do you tutor?
Tutoring is mainly done at our own home in Stokes Valley. We prefer to do tutoring here as it is set up with all the resources needed, its quiet and we find that students are able to give their full attention. We are able to go into students schools with the permission of the school which would need to be organised by the parent. We offer flexible hours for tutoring sessions as we know that everyone's lives are busy. We offer sessions during school hours, after school, and in the weekend. Message us to discuss what days and times work for you.
  • Do you tutor online?
Absolutely. We do like to teach students face-to-face. However, in the current climate we understand the need to be flexible to keep everyone safe and healthy. We can either teach students fully online, or use it interchangeably with face-to-face to suit the students needs. We can also do online teaching in the event that the student needs to isolate due to COVID.
  • How will you know what to teach my child?
Prior to commencing tutoring we do an assessment and consultation so we understand what the student's needs are. At the consultation we discuss what the areas of concerns are (e.g. reading, writing, maths). Then, we use the results from the assessments to design individual programmes for the student. We will provide you with an overview of the assessment in writing. We reassess students at the end of each term so we can keep track of their progress and adjust their individual programme. All results will be shared with you.
  • How can I support my child?
At the end of the session your child will often be given some activities to do at home to support what they have learnt. These activities should take around 10-15 minutes to complete in a session and there is usually work for up to 3 days per week. It is important for students to do the activities during the week when they are between tutoring sessions so that they continue to practice their new skills. When they are doing their activities it is great for you to be supportive and encourage them to try their best to build their confidence in their abilities.
  • What are holiday boosters?
Holiday booster sessions are essentially concentrated lessons designed to accelerate progress in a short period of time.
  • What happens if my child cannot attend a lesson or is sick?
No worries! Make ups will be either done in the term holidays or on alternative days if arranged in advance. Please give advanced warning of any trips or other events that will affect tuition times. Make ups are not available for missed sessions with no prior warning except in emergency cases such as illness arising on the day.
